Background

This is a three year old loggerhead that lived at the Aquarium since September 2005. It was brought in by a local volunteer working with North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. All the sea turtles brought to the Aquarium for rescue and rehabilitation are given ID numbers when they arrive to keep track of which nesting beach they came from. The animal's ID, PKS 05-11, indicates it was the eleventh hatchling from an excavated nest from Pine Knoll Shores in 2005. As the animal improved in health it was used in education programs to help teach Aquarium Vistors about sea turtles and issues they face. Before release, the turtle was in the Queen Anne's Revenge exhibit. You can also view the path of loggerhead PKS05-10. This loggerhead was released with a satellite tag into the Gulf Stream in September 2007. Both of these turtles came from the same excavated nest.
