Introduction

The long-term objective is to provide harvest guidelines for New Zealand's Hauraki Maori and the Department of Conservation (DOC) to sustainably manage Oi (Grey-faced petrel; Pterodroma macroptera gouldi) populations and, more broadly, the Ruamaahua (Aldermen) Islands ecosystem. The research will provide an understanding of the environmental and human factors that drive long- and short-term variability in Oi populations and make predictions of long-term population growth rate and abundance trajectories that will guide future harvest decision-making. As part of this programme, PTTs have been attached to breeding adult Oi to determine spatial and temporal patterns in foraging behaviour. These data will be linked to annual demographic rates and oceanic and atmospheric patterns that potentially may be impacting Oi survival and/or breeding on the Ruamaahua Islands.

Project Partners

New Zealand's Hauraki Maori are directors of this research programme, while Landcare Research, New Zealand Ltd facilitates the science. Collaborating scientists, organisations and agencies include: Josh Adams (US Geological Survey), Department of Conservation, National Institute for Water and Atmosphere, Ministry of Fisheries and Proteus Research and Consulting Ltd.
