Introduction

New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) colonies are expending in the South island of New Zealand, raising some concern on the potential negative impact that fur seals have on commercial fish stocks. Their actual impact on marine resources around New Zealand is not known because there is no accurate information on their diet and limited data where they forage. The NZ fur seal foraging project aims to determine where seals are foraging and what they eat at 3 breeding colonies. The project is funded for a period of three years from November 2010 by the Foundation for Research Science and Technology as a post-doctoral contract, and is hosted by Massey University, Palmerston North, NZ

Project Partners

The project associates are Dr. Laureline Meynier (principal investigator, Massey University), Chris Muller (Sirtrack Ltd.), Dr. Louise Chilvers (DOC Head Office, Wellington), Dr. Laura Boren (DOC Head Office, Wellington), and Dr. Trevor Willis (NIWA, Nelson).
