Background

This turtle was released from Mushroom Beach at Barrow Island. She is one of over 70 flatback turtle tracked by the West Australian Satellite Tracking Project. This is the fifth consecutive year that flatback turtles are being satellite tracked from Barrow Island, Western Australia. This tracking program forms one component of a larger marine turtle research and monitoring program that is being sponsored by Chevron Australian Gorgon project. The program is being carried out by marine turtle biologists from Pendoley Environmental who are also managing a flatback turtle flipper tagging program and a flatback turtle nest success program on Barrow Island.

The satellite tracking results will provide data on the turtles nesting at Barrow Island and will allow researchers to investigate where they go between nesting events both within a season and between seasons, what migratory corridors they use when returning to remote foraging grounds and will show us where those foraging grounds are.
