Background
Princesa Inka, our project’s first loggerhead turtle, was released with a satellite transmitter on March 25, 2003 from the port of Ilo in southern Peru. She was incidentally captured by the longline fishing vessel captained by Miguel Cuentas. Princesa Inka had become hooked while Miguel’s boat was fishing for mahi mahi. The crew was able to bring the turtle aboard and remove the hook. Princesa Inka is named for the Inka people who ruled Peru in pre-colonial times and who are still a large component of Peru’s population.
