Background

Kiki is named after one of my best and closest friends, Kiki Jenkins in honor of her birthday and in thanks for all of her help and incredible support of the Gabon Olive Ridley Project. Kiki the Turtle is our most interesting turtle so far, making her the perfect namesake for Kiki the Human. Much like her namesake, Kiki the Turtle marches to the beat of her own drummer. She actually did not lay a nest - she wandered up the beach, into the Tchimbia River, and then back to the ocean, making the bold decision not to nest that night - and it seems for the remainder of the season. She has already done some of the most interesting things of all the turtles. She has been leading the way as the first turtle to leave the nesting area and it seems she's already been foraging off the coast of the Congos and is now heading even farther south.
Kiki the Human has always been an inspiration, much like her turtle. She is an amazing friend and unique person who is never afraid to make bold decisions like waiting to nest until she thinks the time is right for her. Kiki has been an invaluable part of the Gabon Olive Ridley Project team, providing logistical support and words of inspiration when it felt like all was lost. Humans and turtles alike will be forever grateful to have you on our side - we love you Kiki!
