Background
The loggerhead turtle named Catira was released with a satellite transmitter on February 5, 2007 from the port of Ilo in southern Peru. Catira was brought to port by the longline fishing vessel Virgen del Carmen which is captained by Francisco “Chaval” Bernedo. Catira had been hooked in the mouth while the vessel was fishing for mahi mahi. Chaval and his crew were able to bring the turtle onboard and remove the hook. Catira was named after the Venezuelan girlfriend of Alex, a fisherman collegue from the port of Ilo.
