Toby2's transmitter was sponsored by Star Tour Fritidsresor Finnmatkat - TUI Nordic.
Toby2 has since his release travelled north and recently reached the coast of mainland Turkey. Whether he will stay there for long or move on is unknown as this is the first time a turtle has been tracked making these movements.
Background
Toby2, was found stranded at Messara Bay, southern Crete, during summer 2004. ARCHELON's team in the area were able to promptly send him the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Glyfada, near Athens.
An X-ray revealed that Toby2 had swallowed a fishing hook and line, but by some miracle the hook was not caught on his gut but was passing slowly through. He was in such a weak state from this that he would not have survived in the wild and needed to be force-fed during his initial time at the Centre. After a while he passed the hook and line and his codition improved remarkably. He soon began to free-feed (he has a preference for sardines!).
He has now fully recovered and was released at Chania, north Crete, close to the area he was found last year.
We will be following his progress using a Telonics transmitter that will also provide information on Toby2's diving behaviour. The transmitter was sponsored by Star Tour Fritidsresor Finnmatkat - TUI Nordic.

- This map connects positions generated by the ARGOS system designated as location class (lc) '3', '2', '1', 'A'. Locations that have been "filtered" are displayed as small red dots.
- This maps also shows locations of class 'A' as small black dots which are not connected by a route line.
- Bathymetry layers are derived from the GEBCO One Minute Grid.
- Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll are derived from NASA's Ocean Color data.
- Ocean currents and sea surface heights are derived from AVISO's Ssalto/Duacs Gridded Absolute Dynamic Topography & absolute geostrophic velocities data.
