Machalilla, a sea turtle measuring 88 cm (CCL), was encountered nesting at La Playita Beach in Machalilla National Park on January 13th 2009. After depositing 189 eggs she was equipped with a satellite transmitter and successfully released back to the ocean. Machililla is the second hawksbill turtle to be satellite tagged in Ecuador.
Efforts were made possible through the support and collaboration of Ecuador’s Ministry of the Environment, Equilibrio Azul and Conservation International-Ecuador. The study is being conducted in conjunction with the Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative (EPHI/ICAPO) and NOAA.
