Since leaving the Monterey Bay area and northern Big Sur coast, shearwater #699 has occupied waters over the continental shelfbreak. This bathymetric (seafloor topography) feature separates the shallow coastal shelf from the very deep (>1000 m) waters off the west coast of North America. Birds foraging offshore might take prey that is different from others that forage in shallow waters near the coast. Off shore areas also have different oceanographically forced features such as convergent and divergent fronts generated by wind-stress curl. In future analyses we will examine how shearwaters interact with regional patterns in California Current oceanography...stay tuned.
