A project of Marine Turtle Research Group.

click map for full-size version
Kinduri left Rekawa after the 24.10.06 and migrated towards Minicoy, the most southerly of the Lakshadweep Islands. Since mid-November she alternated her time between the outer shore of the atoll and in the nearby open ocean and we last heard from her on the 26.12.06 (inaccurate fix so not plotted). We are no longer receiving transmissions from her tag.

Background

Kinduri, meaning mermaid in Sinhala, was the last turtle to be satellite tagged on the last night of the expedition. The TCP research tells us that she was tagged after her first nest of the season. All the other turtles tagged during this project had nested at least 4 times before they were tagged to optimise our chances of tracking their post-nesting migrations, but due to the time constraints, the decision was taken to tag Kinduri aftre her first nest. She returned to nest at Rekawa five more times to lay more nests during the 2006 season before her post-nesting migration. Her morning release was photographed by the BBC Natural History Unit crew and the photos will be used to publicise their upcoming documentary.

After her release, Kinduri nested at least another 4 times. On the 24.10.06, Kinduri false-crawled (emerged but did not lay eggs) on Rekawa beach. After that she did not return to lay, but instead started her post-nesting migration towards Minicoy of the Lakshadweep Islands.
