Background

This bald eagle is a winter visitor to the Chesapeake Bay. In spring, this eagle flies home to Quebec and Labrador for the summer months, a distance of over 1,100 miles. In November, this eagle will return to the Bay to hunt wintering waterfowl along the many tributaries of the Bay. We captured this eagle using a rocket net baited with a road killed deer. After fitting the eagle with a solar powered GPS transmitter, we released it on the shoreline of the Bay.
