Background
This bald eagle was banded and fitted with a solar-powered GPS satellite transmitter as a nestling. We climbed the nest tree, lowered the eagle chick to the ground for banding, and then returned it to the nest. It will spend the 5 years exploring the Chesapeake Bay region. Bay bald eagles rotate between the Bay tributaries in search of seasonally available prey like fish and waterfowl. After this eagle reaches breeding age (~ 5 years old) we expect it to establish a nesting territory within the Bay.
