Background

This Olive ridley girl was found on the Northern shore of Kwanda Island while digging her nest to lay her 145 ping pong ball sized eggs. This turtle was also a tag return (she already had flipper tags from earlier this season), so we had met her before. Her carapace (shell) was unusual in that the edges were a bit wavy, possibly a defect from the time she hatched many years ago or caused by a predator trying to eat her. She was in good condition and measured 72cm long and 70.5cm wide. She was fitted with a Kiwisat platform terminal transmitter and released from her Kwanda Island nesting beach inside the mouth of the Congo River.

This project is being managed on behalf of Angola LNG by Mr Warren Klein/Tim Baynham(Angola LNG Wildlife Advisors) and Dr Kellie Pendoley (Specialist sea turtle biologist).
