Background
Navajo was one of over 70 sea turtles admitted to the New England Aquarium marine animal hospital during the early winter of 2009. Navajo was rescued off the beach in late November 2009 by a biologist from the Mass Audubon at Wellfleet Bay, our partners in sea turtle rescue and conservation. Upon admittance to the New England Aquarium, Navajo was found to be hypothermic. Navajo responded well to therapy and was eating well, so well that Navajo had to be put on a limited diet to prevent too much weight gain. Nonetheless, during Navajo’s stay in our hospital, he gained 5.35 kilograms (almost 12 pounds), and grew 11.3 centimeters (4.5 inches). During Navajo’s convalescence, he (or she) has been sharing a tank with 2 other green sea turtles (Everglades & Fossil Bute), it will be interesting to see if all 3 greens head off in the same direction.
