Background

Maja was selected for the satellite tracking program from the Barrow Island flatback rookery. The central east coast of Barrow Island supports the primary flatback rookery on Barrow Island. This is a low energy environment compared to the west coast which supports almost 100% green turtle nesting. A saturation flipper tagging program on six flatback nesting beaches on Barrow Island is in its fourth year with 12 volunteers on two week shifts tagging all 6 beaches from late November to the end of January each year. The satellite tracking program complements the tagging program by identifying the internesting, migratroy pathway and foraging habitat used by the turtles that are being studied in the tagging program at Barrow Island. This ptt was attached by Paul Todd with assistance from 2008/2009 flatback turtle flipper tagging volunteers.
